Grey is a lie told by dots: the seven laws, the ladder, the gate, the evidence statuses, the namespace contract.

One-Bit Design Doctrine

The rule set behind the metanomicon-design-canon. One sentence carries it: grey is a lie told by dots. Every tone on every surface is produced by the density or radius of marks on a lattice, never by an alpha fill. What looks like a gradient is a dither; what looks like a shadow is a change in mark radius.

The seven laws

  1. The dot is the through-line. Every element descends from the lattice: type sits on it, the mark is resolved out of it, the field is it.
  2. Essence (#00f0ff) lives on exactly one dot. The cyan is reserved for the single living point on a surface. Never a fill, never a background, never a second dot.
  3. Sigil (#c2333d) is lines only. Instrumentation, rules, rings. For text at the same hue there is --sigil-text #cd5860, derived by lifting the sigil 18% to clear 5.00:1.
  4. The chromatic split is a ghost. Channel separation appears as an afterimage at the edge of motion, never as a colour of its own.
  5. Two faces. Geist 400/500 and Departure Mono. No third family, no other weights, square corners, no icon set.
  6. Nothing bounces. The one pulse is sin⁴(t·1.55). Motion is a process running on the real text, never a baked image.
  7. The pointer perturbs, it never drives. Interaction nudges a process that was already running. Reduced motion yields a frame that is static and non-blank, taken at t = 3.0.

The opacity ladder

Tone steps are named o-1…o-n and computed, not chosen. o-4 (0.55) is the floor for text: it measures 5.23:1 on the void substrate. Contrast is a number a script produces (contrast-audit.mjs), which is why the ladder can be trusted under any namespace accent.

The dither gate

All imagery passes through an ordered dither: Bayer-8 by default. The gate was tested live against three other algorithms on real photographs before it was adopted. The King Wen sequence of the I Ching serves as an alternative threshold ordering, where a hexagram's trigram coordinates address the Bayer cell; see seed-is-the-identity for what that produced and what it did not.

Evidence, not confidence

Every load-bearing rule carries one of six statuses: measured, derived, asserted, inherited, falsified, untested. Falsified rules stay in the ledger with their correction, because a canon that hides its corrections invites them again. The 44px touch target, the ⌗ index glyph, the o-5 label and the namespace generalisation were all reasoned, believed, and false. The ledger also names what was not established, a practice taken from the V2SPACE technical notes.

The namespace contract

A product namespace inherits everything and overrides five tokens: --ns-name, --ns-accent, --ns-sigil, --ns-mark (must contain a period), --ns-face. Anything that needs a sixth is a fork and needs a conversation. This is what lets a component written once render correctly under every namespace that will ever exist.
